The University of California Community Engagement Network is a self-organized group of community engagement administrators, faculty and staff representing each of the ten UC campuses.
Sandra Bass (UC Berkeley), Ph.D., is an Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Public Service Center at UC Berkeley. She has worked on women’s leadership, girls education and reproductive health in sub-Saharan Africa and as a faculty member in criminology and political science at the University of Maryland. Stacey Muse (UC Davis), Ph.D., brings 20 years experience in the nonprofit and education sectors building strategic partnerships for public good. Her research focuses on understanding and elevating the voice of community-based organizations partnering with institutions of higher education, building the capacity of nonprofit organizations, and co-creating democratically engaged partnerships.June Ahn (UC Irvine), Ph.D., is a Professor of Learning Sciences and Research-Practice Partnerships at the UC Irvine (UCI) School of Education. He is also a Senior Associate Dean at the UCI School of Education (my term: 2024-2027). He conducts research at the intersection of participatory design, technology, education, and community partnerships.
Emily J. Ozer (UC Berkeley), Ph.D., is a Professor of Community Health Sciences at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. She teaches graduate courses in behavioral science theory, mental health, community interventions and program evaluation. Emily also directs the Institute of Human Development (IHD) and is the Faculty Liaison to the Provost/EVCP on Public Scholarship and EngagementMichael Rios (UC Davis), Ph.D., is professor of landscape architecture + environmental design in the Department of Human Ecology at UC Davis where is he is also a faculty member in the Community Development, Education, and Geography graduate programs. His scholarship focuses on higher education, community engagement, equitable design, and placemaking.Roxane Cohen Silver (UC Irvine), Ph.D., is Vice Provost for Institutional Research, Assessment, and Planning and Distinguished Professor of Psychology, Medicine, and Public Health at the University of California, Irvine, where she has been actively involved in research, teaching, and administration since 1989.
Susan Stone (UC Berkeley), Ph.D., MA, is the Dean for Berkeley Social Welfare as well as the Catherine Mary and Eileen Clare Hutto Professor of Social Services in Public Education at the School of Social Welfare.Stephanie Reyes-Tuccio (UC Irvine), Ph.D., is the Vice Provost for Educational and Community Partnerships at UC Irvine. She leads campus efforts to bring first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students to and through higher education by connecting and advancing educational equity efforts across public education segments, the university, and community stakeholders. Douglas (Doug) Barrera (UCLA), Ph.D., is the Senior Associate Director for Faculty and Community Engagement at UCLA. At the Center, Doug works directly with faculty and community partners to develop community-engaged courses for undergraduates. He has developed and directs UCLA’s Collaboratory initiative, the Astin Community Engaged Scholars and the Changemaker Scholars programs.
Tessa Hill (UC Davis), Ph.D., graduated with a BS in Marine Science from Eckerd College (1999) and a Ph.D. in Marine Science from UC Santa Barbara (2004). Her research interests include climate change, both past and present, and understanding the response of marine species to environmental perturbation.Jason A. Douglas (UC Irvine), Ph.D. MA, completed his environmental psychology doctoral training at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York, wherein he worked with children from underserved communities in New York City and forest-fringe community residents in Jamaica to examine social and environmental inequities that challenge community health and wellbeing.Michelle Caswell (UCLA), Ph.D., is a Professor of Archival Studies in the Department of Information Studies at UCLA and Special Advisor to the EVCP on Community Engaged Scholarship. Caswell directs a team of students at UCLA’s Community Archives Lab, which explores the ways that independent, identity-based memory organizations document, shape, and provide access to the histories of minoritized communities with a particular emphasis on understanding their affective, political, and artistic impact.
Shalom Staub (UCLA), Ph.D., is a Professor Emeritus and former assistant vice provost and executive director of the UCLA Center for Community Engagement. He is trained as an ethnographic researcher and has grounded his work across a diverse range of institutional and community contexts.Cori Lucero (UC Merced), Assistant Chancellor and Chief of StaffWalid A. Afifi (UCSB), Ph.D., is Professor in the Dept of Communication and Associate Dean, and Director of Community Engaged Initiatives, in the Division of Social Sciences. He teaches classes related to community engagement, interpersonal communication, nonverbal communication, relational communication, and uncertainty.
Vernette Doty (UC Merced), M.Ed., serves as the Director of the Community Engagement Center, the Margo F. Souza Student Leadership Center and the CollegeCorps program, and currently as the Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement at the University of California, Merced.Qingfang Wang (UC Riverside), Ph.D., is a professor of geography and public policy and academic director of the Inland Center for Sustainable Development at UC Riverside. Her research and teaching interests lie broadly in inequality and development with a particular concern for underserved communities (such as immigrants, people of color, and women).Susan Derwin (UCSB), Ph.D., is the Director of the Comparative Literature, Interdisciplinary Humanities Center at UCSB. Her research research focuses on testimonial narrative as a tool for the social reintegration of people who have survived traumatic experiences.
Deborah Wiebe (UC Merced), Ph.D., joined the faculty in Psychological Sciences at UC Merced in Fall, 2013, where she serves as head of the Health Psychology group. Her research focuses on the social and developmental context of self-regulation and coping with chronic illness.Louie F. Rodriguez (UC Riverside), Ed.D., is the Vice Provost and Dean of the Division of Undergraduate Education at UC Riverside. His research focuses on issues of educational equity, Latina/o/x/ education, and community engagement.Jeffrey Milem (UCSB), Ph.D., is Professor Emeritus and former Jules Zimmer Dean of the Gevirtz School.His research focused on the ways in which colleges and universities could be organized to enhance equity, access, and success for all students; the racial context within higher education; and the relationship between how colleges and universities organize themselves and student outcomes and faculty role performance.
Robin Maria DeLugan (UC Merced), Ph.D., is a Professor Emeritus and has research focuses on El Salvador’s post-civil war transitions and efforts to create national unity by promoting national culture, history, and identity.Beth Claassen Thrush (UC Riverside), Ph.D., works in the offices of the Chancellor and Provost as the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects. Her research focuses on school-community partnerships, international comparative education, and Latine student engagement.Kashia Arnold (UCSB), Ph.D., is a US historian of public policy, the history of capitalism, and the US and the World. Her current research examines U.S. trade interdependence and network growth with Asia from the nineteenth century to the onset of World War II.
Abigail L. Andrews (UCSD), Ph.D., is a Professor of Urban Studies and Planning, Director of the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies and the Migration Field Research Program, and affiliated faculty in Sociology at UC San Diego. Her research focuses on state violence, gender, and grassroots advocacy among migrants from Mexico and Central America.Catherine (Cat) Lettieri (UCSD), MA, is the Assistant Director, Changemaker Institute and Program Director, College Corps. Her work and research have focused on Changemaking, community-engaged learning, faculty development, community as co-educator, and college access, and I am passionate about community-driven problem-solving.Wylie Liu (UCSF), MPA, MPH, is the Executive Director of the Center for Community Engagement, and facilitates community-academic-health and healthcare partnerships at UCSF. Her work focuses on community engaged research, community health, education and economic inclusion.
David Quijada (UCSD), Ph.D., is a Teaching Professor and the Director of the Critical Community Engagement Academic Program. His research centers on cultural citizenship, participatory action research, and youth intercultural alliances.His research research centers on cultural citizenship, participatory action research, and youth intercultural alliances.Roberto Ariel Vargas (UCSF), MPH, is the Associate Director for Community Health Planning & Policy Development and Economic Inclusion. In this capacity, he leads multi-stakeholder health initiatives that provide opportunities for UCSF to leverage its research and science expertise and resources to benefit local communities.Rebecca London (UCSC), Ph.D., MA, is a community-engaged researcher whose research is intended to be actionable by and responsive to the needs of community partners as well as contribute to various academic literatures. She the founding Faculty Director of Campus + Community, a center devoted to supporting community-engaged research across UCSC and in our surrounding communities.
Rochelle Smarr (UCSD), Ed.D., is the Director of Experiential Learning at UC San Diego. She leads Experiential Learning initiatives to increase student awareness and participation in engaged learning opportunities beyond the classroom across campus and within community spaces, such as the UC Washington (UCDC) program, Academic Internships, and the Co-Curricular Record, an extra-curricular activity transcript.Rana Barar(UCSF), MPH, is currently Associate Director for the Community Engagement Program, the Research Action Group for Equity (RAGE), and the Impacting Policy and Practice Through Accelerating Translation (IMPACT) program at UCSF’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). She is also a Director for the School of Medicine’s Differences Matter Initiative, focusing on diversifying science and medicine.Ned LeBlond (UCSC), MBA, is the executive director of the Institute for Social Transformation and Campus + Community. He works with faculty who are leading interdisciplinary centers and research initiatives to develop human-centered implementation strategies, develop partnership agreements, and support the conceptualization and design of all aspects of their justice-focused research projects.
Tricia Taylor-Oliveira (UCSD), MA, is Senior Program Director, Academic Internship Program (AIP) at UC San Diego. She manages the development of AIP’s partnerships with faculty, departments, and community organizations, and advises students seeking opportunities to connect their studies with real-world experience.Aisha Queen-Johnson (UCSF), MSW, serves as the Director of Community Engaged Learning at UCSF’s Center for Community Engagement. Her work focuses on developing infrastructure and pathways for faculty, staff, students, and community members to create mutually beneficial community/campus partnerships across the university.Amber West (UCLA), MFA, Ph.D., is a writer, educator, and community-engaged arts and humanities scholar-practitioner. She leads the Writing Program’s efforts to expand community-engaged writing, teaching, and learning opportunities that connect students with nonprofit partners within and beyond Los Angeles.
Saskia Nauenberg Dunkell (UCSC), Ph.D., manages research projects, graduate and undergraduate student programs, communications, and public humanities initiatives at The Humanities Institute. Her scholarship examines transitional justice measures used to address human rights violations in the wake of mass violence.
Darío León(UCSC), is the Research and Community Coordinator at the Institute for Social Transformation and the Center for Labor and Community. Darío assists faculty in their research initiatives and centers, particularly with a community engagement focus.
