The University of California Community Engagement Network is a self-organized group of community engagement administrators, faculty and staff representing each of the ten UC campuses.
Sandra Bass (UC Berkeley), Ph.D., is an Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Public Service Center at UC Berkeley. She has worked on women’s leadership, girls education and reproductive health in sub-Saharan Africa and as a faculty member in criminology and political science at the University of Maryland. Stacey Muse (UC Davis), Ph.D., brings 20 years experience in the nonprofit and education sectors building strategic partnerships for public good. Her research focuses on understanding and elevating the voice of community-based organizations partnering with institutions of higher education, building the capacity of nonprofit organizations, and co-creating democratically engaged partnerships.June Ahn (UC Irvine), Ph.D., is a Professor of Learning Sciences and Research-Practice Partnerships at the UC Irvine (UCI) School of Education. He is also a Senior Associate Dean at the UCI School of Education (my term: 2024-2027). He conducts research at the intersection of participatory design, technology, education, and community partnerships.
Emily J. Ozer (UC Berkeley), Ph.D., is a Professor of Community Health Sciences at the UC Berkeley School of Public Health. She teaches graduate courses in behavioral science theory, mental health, community interventions and program evaluation.Michael Rios (UC Davis), Ph.D., is professor of landscape architecture + environmental design in the Department of Human Ecology at UC Davis where is he is also a faculty member in the Community Development, Education, and Geography graduate programs. His scholarship focuses on higher education, community engagement, equitable design, and placemaking.Shalom Staub (UCLA), Ph.D., is a professor emeritus and former assistant vice provost and executive director of the UCLA Center for Community Engagement. He is trained as an ethnographic researcher and has grounded his work across a diverse range of institutional and community contexts.
Susan Stone (UC Berkeley), Ph.D. M.A., is the Dean for Berkeley Social Welfare as well as the Catherine Mary and Eileen Clare Hutto Professor of Social Services in Public Education at the School of Social Welfare.Stephanie Reyes-Tuccio (UC Irvine), Ph.D., is the Vice Provost for Educational and Community Partnerships at UC Irvine. She leads campus efforts to bring first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented students to and through higher education by connecting and advancing educational equity efforts across public education segments, the university, and community stakeholders. Douglas (Doug) Barrera (UCLA), Ph.D., is the Senior Associate Director for Faculty and Community Engagement at UCLA. At the Center, Doug works directly with faculty and community partners to develop community-engaged courses for undergraduates. He has developed and directs UCLA’s Collaboratory initiative, the Astin Community Engaged Scholars and the Changemaker Scholars programs.
Tessa Hill (UC Davis), Ph.D., graduated with a B.S. in Marine Science from Eckerd College (1999) and a Ph.D. in Marine Science from UC Santa Barbara (2004). Her research interests include climate change, both past and present, and understanding the response of marine species to environmental perturbation.Jason A. Douglas (UC Irvine), Ph.D. M.A., completed his environmental psychology doctoral training at the Graduate School and University Center of the City University of New York, wherein he worked with children from underserved communities in New York City and forest-fringe community residents in Jamaica to examine social and environmental inequities that challenge community health and wellbeing.Michelle Caswell (UCLA), Ph.D., is a Professor of Archival Studies in the Department of Information Studies at UCLA. Caswell directs a team of students at UCLA’s Community Archives Lab, which explores the ways that independent, identity-based memory organizations document, shape, and provide access to the histories of minoritized communities with a particular emphasis on understanding their affective, political, and artistic impact.
Robin Maria DeLugan (UC Merced), Ph.D., is a professor emeritus and has research focuses on El Salvador’s post-civil war transitions and efforts to create national unity by promoting national culture, history, and identity.Louie F. Rodriguez (UC Riverside), Ed.D., is the Vice Provost and Dean of the Division of Undergraduate Education at UC Riverside. Vernette Doty (UC Merced), M.Ed., serves as the Director of the Community Engagement Center, the Margo F. Souza Student Leadership Center and the CollegeCorps program, and currently as the Interim Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement at the University of California, Merced.Qingfang Wang (UC Riverside), Ph.D., is a professor of geography and public policy and academic director of the Inland Center for Sustainable Development at UC Riverside. Deborah Wiebe (UC Merced), Ph.D., joined the faculty in Psychological Sciences at UC Merced in Fall, 2013, where she serves as head of the Health Psychology group. Her research focuses on the social and developmental context of self-regulation and coping with chronic illness.Walid A. Afifi (UCSB), Ph.D., is Professor in the Dept of Communication and Associate Dean, and Director of Community Engaged Initiatives, in the Division of Social Sciences. Beth Claassen Thrush (UC Riverside), Ph.D., works in the offices of the Chancellor and Provost as the Director of Strategic Initiatives and Special Projects. Her research focuses on school-community partnerships, international comparative education, and Latine student engagement.Susan Derwin (UCSB), Ph.D., is the Director of the Comparative Literature, Interdisciplinary Humanities Center at UCSB. Her research research focuses on testimonial narrative as a tool for the social reintegration of people who have survived traumatic experiences.Michelle Caswell, Ph.D., is a Professor of Archival Studies in the Department of Information Studies at UCLA.
